Historic Village of Bargni
Bargni is situated in the hilly area about 1.5 km west of Serrungraina, at an elevation of 282 meters. The origin of bragni is unknown, and the etymology itself is uncertain: probably this settlement, like almost all other fortified centers in the area, arose shortly before the year 1000, as a result of the continuous struggles among feudal lords for possession of new lands.
In 1283 it was part of the “castles on this side of the Metauro River” subject to the city of Fano. Later the “castle” of Bargni was involved in the wars between the Malatesta of Fano and the Montefeltro of Urbino; terrible was the conquest in 1462 by Federico di Montefeltro, who sacked and had several inhabitants killed. Of the medieval age it retains walls and buildings such as the Chiesaa of the Holy Trinity built on the site of an ancient tower. At the entrance to the town are two villas belonging to two great local families: Villa Federici and Villa Serafini. Villa Federici (1683) was commissioned by Abbot Domenico Federici (1633-1720), one of the illustrious men of Fano and founder of the Federiciana library in Fano. in Villa Serafini (19th cent.) was born General Bernardino Serafini (1822-1906), a patriot of the Risorgimento, who distinguished himself particularly in the defense of Rome (1849); he participated in 1860 in the Expedition dle Mille and obtained the ranks of general after unification. In 1886 he was appointed senator of the kingdom. A plaque in his memory is visible in the town square.
